Evening Standard - Conman who tricked students into applying for illegal loans faces jail
The defendant pleaded guilty to his part in an extensive fraud on both university students and the Student Loan Company. He approached students over a number of months and suggested that they would be eligible for additional bursaries, but in fact applied on their behalf for loans to which they were not entitled, leaving the students responsible for the debt. His part in the fraud saw the SLC paying out an extra £73,267, almost half of which was transferred by the students to Mr Mohamed and which was spent by him on holidays to Morocco and Canada. He was given a 16 month suspended sentence by the Recorder who accepted defence counsel’s submissions that he had exceptional mitigation.
